Many of the United States’ partners, who have had a tense relationship with Washington due to Donald Trump, would wish for the American president to be as weakened as possible by all the mistakes he has made on the international stage and his ever-decreasing popularity. Despite his many blunders, however, Trump will not retreat into his ivory tower at the White House, as some leaders hope, but will seek revenge, especially on the U.S. allies whom he considers responsible for the failure of his military campaign against Iran, according to an analysis by The Economist.
For the authoritarian leaders of countries such as China, Iran, and other adversaries of the United States, surviving the maximum pressure campaigns launched by Trump would be the greatest propaganda victory – even if these autocrats have not suffered attacks as virulent as those directed by the Trump administration against liberal democracies.
And some of the United States’ allies would wish for Trump to limp towards the finish line in the second part of his term. This does not mean that leaders from Berlin, Riyadh, or Tokyo would want Trump to lose the war in Iran or admit his defeat in the trade war against China.
The weakening of America terrifies her allies in Europe, Asia, and the Middle East, who are many years away – at best – from the moment when they will be able to defend themselves without the help of the superpower that has protected them for so long.
But, a furious American president, abandoned by friends, who renounces his aggressive plans and focuses more on the construction of the White House ballroom and his triumphal arch, is a vision that many governments would wish to become reality. They would greatly appreciate if a categorical defeat of the Republicans in the November elections would weaken the power that Trump holds over his own party in the American Congress and lead to the imposition of stricter limits on his autocratic leadership.
