According to initial information, the drone armed with a bomb did not explode because the detonator was defective. Initial clues suggest that the drone, which was found near some Ukrainian cargo planes at the German airport, originated from Russia.

Perhaps the drone armed with explosives found on Wednesday at the Leipzig airport did not explode, but the fact that it penetrated the airport perimeter, near some Ukrainian cargo planes, raises obvious concerns about the security of international aviation.

Although the identity of the culprits remains unknown, initial evidence clearly indicates a plot orchestrated by Russia. This is the first time a drone with explosives has been found in Europe, far from the border with Ukraine, notes Dan Sabbagh, a columnist for The Guardian specializing in defense and security.

The photographs published by German newspapers show a quadcopter, a model known from the war in Ukraine, to which a package was attached. The drone was a few meters away from a Ukrainian Antonov type cargo plane, easily identifiable by its shades of yellow and blue.

The police in the German state of Saxony confirmed that the drone was “carrying an unknown explosive device”, discovered by an employee in the “secured flight operations area for cargo”, located near the southern runway of the airport.
