Unprecedented nuclear threat: North Korea introduces automatic reprisals in the event of Kim Jong Un’s death, in a major escalation of its security doctrine, which provides for the immediate triggering of a nuclear response.
North Korea has updated its constitution to stipulate an automatic nuclear retaliation strike in the event that leader Kim Jong Un is assassinated or if the nuclear weapons command and control system is threatened, according to reports cited by Fox News.
According to the information, the amendment was reportedly approved during a session of the Supreme People’s Assembly in Pyongyang, which began on March 22. The National Intelligence Service of South Korea (NIS) is said to have informed high-ranking officials about these changes.
The new provision would stipulate that “if the command and control system over the state’s nuclear forces is endangered by the attacks of hostile forces, a nuclear attack will be launched automatically and immediately”.
The revised policy would also include procedures for retaliatory actions in the scenario where the leadership of the North Korean state is incapacitated or eliminated.
