Iran is stepping up its threats and has not ruled out preemptive military action, though officials in Tehran have acknowledged positive developments in mediated talks with the US ahead of the crucial midterm elections. Gulf states remain “prepared for the worst,” Euronews reports.
Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei, warned that “any threat, regardless of its scale or nature, must be met with an immediate, forceful response without geographical limits.”
Khamenei’s threat comes as urgent diplomatic efforts continue to avert another all-out war with Iran, which would have devastating consequences for the Middle East and beyond.
On Sunday, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Tehran hoped “reason would prevail on the other side, so that diplomacy would be chosen over other courses of action,” adding that “based on our experience in the last two wars, we are much stronger than before.”
The Supreme Leader met on Saturday with Iran’s top military commanders and instructed them to prepare for possible renewed U.S.-Israeli military action, according to the official IRNA news agency.
