Voters in Virginia approved, on Tuesday, a referendum for the redrawing of this American state’s congressional map, writes The New York Times, which analyzes the consequences of the vote from the perspective of the upcoming legislative scrutiny in November.
Based on the new configuration, there is a possibility that in the fall, the Democrats could win up to four seats previously held by Republicans in the House of Representatives.
Furthermore, the efforts of the Democratic Party to take the majority in the House of Representatives during the midterm elections receive a new boost.
The new districts in Virginia, designed by Democratic lawmakers and approved by Governor Abigail Spanberger, were conceived to bring the American Democratic Party 10 out of the 11 representative mandates in the Washington legislature, compared to six, which they currently control.
The referendum that validated the new constituencies represents the most recent episode in the “war of redrawing electoral districts” waged by Republicans and Democrats at a national level.
