The Kremlin appears to be intensifying its control over the internet in Russia, as it tests new restrictions associated with the “white list” of government-approved websites and applications, writes The Guardian.

The British publication reports that residents of the Russian capital have resorted to using walkie-talkies and pagers, as the internet, particularly mobile, is inaccessible in Moscow and elsewhere, and there is no official forecast for when online services might return.

Residents of Moscow and St. Petersburg first reported difficulties accessing mobile internet about a week ago.

Many complained that they could not access websites and could not use network applications, while others reported that they could not even make voice calls.
