The US President, Donald Trump, stated that “the situation is getting very close” to a significant progress, which could end the war in Ukraine. However, his Ukrainian counterpart, Volodimir Zelenski, warned that long-term security guarantees will be needed to deter Russia, writes Financial Times.

Trump and Zelenski discussed on Sunday in Florida, at Mar-a-Lago, the dialogue being characterized as “excellent” by the American leader.

Later, in a WhatsApp conversation with journalists held on Monday, upon returning to Europe, the Ukrainian president revealed that currently under discussion is an American security guarantee initially valid for 15 years.

Although this could be extended, such a duration would be too short, Zelenski argues.

“I told him (Trump) that we would very much like to consider the possibility of a 30, 40 or 50 year guarantee,” the Ukrainian president specified.

According to him, Donald Trump said he “will think about it”.
