In an increasingly volatile world, citizens of the European Union have differing views on the level of expenditure that Brussels should allocate for defense and security, writes Euronews.

Against the backdrop of transatlantic relations at a historic low, Europe is trying to regain, consolidate, and take control of its own defense capabilities.

However, despite recent continental efforts to strengthen security, the majority of Europeans seem to have doubts about their governments’ ability to protect them, according to the latest Eurobarometer data.

More precisely, over two-thirds of Europeans believe their country is threatened: France (79%), the Netherlands (77%), and Denmark (76%) record the highest percentages of respondents sharing this opinion, while Slovenia (50%), Croatia (52%), and the Czech Republic (52%) have the lowest levels.

At the same time, EU citizens make a clear distinction between threats to their country and those to their own person, with the majority (51%) disagreeing with the idea that their personal safety is in danger.
