Russian opposition figure Boris Nadejdin has left Russia and sought refuge in Paris, as Moscow intensifies its crackdown on critical voices ahead of the parliamentary elections scheduled for the end of this year.
Nadejdin, a liberal politician with a long-standing career, attracted international attention during the presidential elections in Russia in 2024, when his candidacy, initially considered without real chances against Vladimir Putin, unexpectedly gained support. However, his rise was halted after the electoral authorities banned him from participating in the vote.
From the presidential campaign, 63-year-old Nadejdin has remained one of the few well-known public figures in Russia who have continued to openly oppose the war in Ukraine. This very stance has made him an increasingly uncomfortable presence for the Kremlin, notes The Guardian.
“The good news is that I’m alive and free. Unfortunately, for the moment I’m not in Russia,” Nadejdin stated in a video clip filmed in front of the Eiffel Tower. He added that he needs “to look around and figure out how to continue his life.”
