The Chief of the Defense Staff, General Gheorghiță Vlad, stated in an interview for Euronews that it is unlikely for the Russian Federation to attack a NATO member state, but such a possibility cannot be completely ruled out. According to him, Romania has the necessary defense capability and can withstand a potential attack.

“From our analyses, it is unlikely that the Russian Federation will launch an attack on a NATO state, but it is not excluded and we, as military, cannot rule out all variants,” General Vlad affirmed. He emphasized that Russia often uses “false flag operations” and hybrid warfare methods to destabilize the states in the region.

The general mentioned that Romania is part of a regional defense plan, has allocated forces and eight active battle groups, with a ninth one in formation. “I believe all conditions for an effective collective defense are met,” he specified.

When asked if Romania could withstand like Ukraine, the Army Chief responded affirmatively: “We need a population prepared for defense, a national industry capable of supporting the war effort, and a coherent plan to combat disinformation. If we have these three elements, we can repel any aggressor. Romania has sufficient defensive capacity and a very good security situation, relying on solid partnerships and a growing economy.”
