Four captured Russian soldiers spoke to the BBC about the horrific conditions in the Russian army and the horrors and brutality that Kremlin’s soldiers are subjected to on the Ukrainian front. Two of them recounted how Russian soldiers are executed on the spot by their own commanders when they refuse to carry out illegal orders.

One of the men told the BBC team how he witnessed the execution of a soldier on his commander’s order. The latter was decorated with the title “Hero of Russia” in 2024.

Another soldier, from a different unit, tells that he saw his commander killing four soldiers.

“I knew them. I remember one of them was screaming ‘Don’t shoot, I’ll do anything!'”

Another soldier says he saw 20 bodies of his comrades in a mass grave after they had been “zeroed” by colleagues. The term “zeroing” is used by Russian soldiers to refer to executions within the Russian army.

In the documentary “Zero Line: Inside Russia’s War”, the soldiers detailed how they were tortured for refusing to participate in suicidal attacks against Ukrainians.
