China has assured Finland, in private discussions, that it will never allow Russia to use nuclear weapons, according to Finland’s President, Alexander Stubb, as reported by Politico. The Finnish president has downplayed fears of an imminent Russian attack on a NATO state and warned that Europe is approaching a moment when it will need to reopen dialogue with Moscow.
In an exclusive interview for Axel Springer Global Reporters Network, Stubb was adamant when asked if Russia could use nuclear weapons, stating that Beijing represents a strong deterrent in preventing the escalation of the war in Ukraine by Moscow.
“The Foreign Minister of China visited me this summer and I raised this issue. And he told me ‘we will never allow this to happen’. And I think this is a pretty good form of deterrence,” said Stubb.
The head of Chinese diplomacy, Wang Yi, met with Stubb in Helsinki on July 5th, and the widespread invasion of Russia in Ukraine and the security of Europe were among the topics discussed by the two. China remains one of Moscow’s most important economic and diplomatic partners.
Stubb added that Russia has only to gain if it keeps Europeans focused on the possibility of a nuclear escalation or a direct attack on a NATO state.
