The government in Chișinău will consider the possibility of extending the neutral number mechanism for cars from the Transnistrian region, after its expiration on December 31, 2026. The statement was made by the Deputy Prime Minister for Reintegration, Valeriu Chiveri, during the “Teritoria Svobodî” show with Lilia Burakovski, reports IPN.

According to the Deputy Prime Minister, the extension of the mechanism was one of the topics recently discussed, and the subject is constantly addressed by the representatives of Tiraspol. “So far, nothing has changed,” said the official, referring to the current situation regarding the registration of cars.

Valeriu Chiveri stated that the registration with neutral numbers can still be done at the two offices in Tiraspol and Râbnița, where representatives of the constitutional authorities are active.

The Deputy Prime Minister did not specify in what form the mechanism could be extended. He explained that this is provided by law, and any possible extension depends on the deputies, who “have their own opinion”. According to him, the support of the Parliament is needed, and work on this subject has already begun.

Valeriu Chiveri made the connection between the position of Chisinau and the commitments undertaken in 2018 through the “Berlin Plus” protocol, qualifying the neutral numbers mechanism as one of the compromise elements accepted by the Moldovan authorities.
