So far, Russia has been the only winner of the Middle East war, against the backdrop of rising energy prices and the diminishing attention given to its war against Ukraine, believes the President of the European Council, Antonio Costa.
The statement was made by the official in front of EU ambassadors from around the world, gathered at an event in Brussels, according to hotnews.ro. Costa mentioned that such circumstances allow the Kremlin to continue financing the war against Ukraine.
“So far, there is only one winner in this war – Russia. It obtains new resources to finance its war against Ukraine, as energy prices rise. It benefits from the diversion of military capabilities that could otherwise have been sent to support Ukraine. And it benefits from the reduced attention given to the Ukrainian front, as the conflict in the Middle East takes center stage,” declared the European leader.
Costa believes that the EU must protect the international order based on rules, currently challenged by the USA. At the same time, the head of the EU Council urged the parties involved in the Middle East war to return to the negotiating table, to avoid further escalations.
