US Republican Senator Thom Tillis has warned that the agreement reached by President Donald Trump with Russia for the supply of diesel on international markets could violate United States law and could endanger the lives of Americans. Thus, Tillis joins the critics made by other politicians from both parties.
Donald Trump announced on Friday that Russia has agreed to supply diesel to the global markets, and his administration has temporarily suspended American sanctions on Russian fuels, introduced to limit Moscow’s revenues intended for financing the war in Ukraine.
“I believe there are legitimate arguments to support the claim that the president is not respecting the law,” declared Senator Thom Tillis, a Republican senator from North Carolina, who is set to retire from the Senate at the end of his term, in January, according to Reuters, cited by News.ro.
The agreement announced by Trump comes at a time when diesel prices, used in agriculture, road freight transport and home heating, are close to historic highs.
The high costs of fuels represent a problem for the Trump administration ahead of the November Congressional elections, which will decide whether the Republicans maintain their fragile majorities in the House of Representatives and Senate.
Analysts, however, believe that the agreement with Moscow has little chance of producing a lasting decrease in fuel prices. The American Treasury Secretary, Scott Bessent, defended the agreement on Sunday, stating that the administration has the necessary legal authority to implement it and that the measure will contribute to reducing the costs borne by consumers.
“We will do this using all the legal skills we have at our disposal. Therefore, anyone in Congress who claims that an older law or the current Lindsey Graham law prohibits us from proceeding this way is mistaken,” Bessent stated on the “Fox & Friends” show.
Republican representative Brian Fitzpatrick, from Pennsylvania, announced on Saturday that he will introduce a bipartisan bill meant to prevent President Donald Trump from lifting sanctions on Russian oil, at a time when the world is facing a fuel shortage.
