Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babis stated on Tuesday that his country would be ready to honor its commitments made through NATO membership in the event of a Russian attack on a Baltic country, according to Reuters.
Babis, whose government includes a pro-Russian and anti-immigration party, has halted Czech contributions to support Ukraine and has chosen not to participate in EU and NATO funding and military aid commitments for Kiev.
He has repeatedly spoken about the need for European leaders to promote peace and was criticized in a 2023 presidential campaign for saying he would not send Czech soldiers to fight for allies.
Andrej Babis now says that Prague would intervene
The Prime Minister was asked by www.denik.cz if Prague is preparing for the eventuality of a Russian action against NATO, a possibility circulated by the secret services of some NATO member states.
He said that he is having discussions about security challenges, including with President Petr Pavel.
“The fact that we do not talk about it and that journalists do not receive material for their articles does not mean that we are not dealing with it,” Babis stated in the video interview.
“Of course we are preparing. If, God forbid, Russia were to attack a Baltic state, then, under Article 5 (the mutual defense commitment of NATO states), we would have to send two of our mechanized brigades,” added the Czech leader.
“Of course we would be active and talk about it, but I see no reason to share classified information”, he added.
Western European governments and intelligence services have stated that there is an increasingly likely chance that Russia will intensify hybrid attacks, such as sabotage, or even launch a limited military attack.
