Right-wing extremists remain the greatest threat to German democracy, and their number has significantly increased to 58,700 last year, according to the German internal intelligence service, quoted by BBC.

The matter is about an increase of more than 8,000 compared to the previous year, the agency announced in its annual report, also adding that violence from the far left is also on the rise and can be considered a warning signal for the rule of law in Germany.

The German democracy is essentially under a “permanent attack” both from within and from outside, said Sinan Selen, the head of the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution (BfV).

Espionage activities against Germany largely originate in Russia, China, and Iran, the report further indicates.

Among the extremists identified, the BfV has pinpointed 5,600 who have a propensity for violence.

The extremist AfD is rising in the polls

The Agency also specified that the increase in the number of right-wing extremists is largely a consequence of the rise of the Alternative for Germany party (AfD), whose members reached 70,000 in 2025.

AfD is set to have its party conference in the eastern city of Erfurt this weekend, and the German Interior Minister, Alexander Dobrindt, has issued a warning about potential violence during protests against the event. Protests must always remain non-violent, he said.
