President Donald Trump officially notified lawmakers over the weekend that the United States is once again at war with Iran, which grants his administration an additional 60-day period to resort to military force in the region without the approval of Congress.
In a letter addressed to Congress, dated July 10 and obtained by POLITICO, Trump stated that the attacks that began on July 7 constitute a military action in accordance with his responsibility “to protect American citizens and the interests of the United States, both domestically and abroad”.
This intermittent war has proven very difficult for Trump to resolve, in the context where the two countries are fighting for control of the Strait of Hormuz, a vital strategic point for global energy supply. Trump expressed his fury over the inability to conclude a peace deal with Iran, while Republicans fear being blamed for high gasoline prices on the eve of the midterm elections.
Trump further intensified military pressure on Iran on Monday, declaring that the US will reimpose a blockade and take control of the strait, levying taxes on ships transiting this navigable route.
