The American President, Donald Trump, gave a sharp response to critics regarding the degradation of living standards in the USA, stating that his absolute priority is to prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons, over concerns related to inflation or fuel prices.

The statements were made on Tuesday, before the American leader’s departure for a state visit to Beijing. Asked about the economic pressure felt by American citizens after two months of armed conflict and the prolonged blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, the president stated: “I’m not thinking about the American financial situation — I’m not thinking about anyone. I’m thinking about one thing: we cannot allow Iran to have a nuclear weapon.”

Inflation and the energy crisis in figures

The President’s comments come shortly after the publication of official data from the Department of Labor, indicating a worrying economic situation.

The Consumer Price Index (CPI) recorded an increase of 3.8% compared to the same period last year, the price of gasoline rose by 5.4% just in the last month, reaching a national average of 4.50 dollars per gallon (compared to 3.13 dollars last year) and the global impact after the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz affects the transit of a fifth of the world’s oil needs, generating shock waves in the global economy.

A recent survey conducted by CNN/SSRS shows that 77% of respondents believe that the policies of the Trump administration, especially the decision to go to war with Iran and the imposition of trade tariffs, are directly responsible for the increase in the cost of living.
