Peace talks to end the war in Ukraine could begin as early as this winter, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said on Tuesday, according to The Independent. Poland wants to play a central role in the negotiations to end the conflict that began after the Russian invasion in February 2022.
Poland has been one of Ukraine’s staunchest supporters since Russian army troops invaded the country in 2022, and Prime Minister Tusk has pledged to be strongly involved in any peace talks, especially as Poland will take over the rotating presidency of the EU Council on January 1, 2025.
“As you can imagine, our delegation will have the responsibility, among other things, of setting the political calendar, perhaps also what the situation will look like during the negotiations. We believe that, although we still have question marks, we will be able to start the talks in the winter of this year,” Tusk said.
The Polish leader also said that the French president is scheduled to visit Warsaw on Thursday to report on the discussions he had with Donald Trump and Zelensky at their last meeting in Paris.
In addition, Tusk also said that he is in constant contact with Baltic and Scandinavian allies as well as with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who is due to come to Warsaw early next year.
“I really want Poland to be the country that will not only be present, but that will set the tone for these discussions that will bring us security and secure Poland’s interests,” Tusk said.
On Monday, Zelensky again spoke of a diplomatic resolution to the war, and his latest comments suggested that the Kiev government was increasingly open to the idea of negotiating with Russia, but he told Trump and Macron that he did not believe Putin wanted to stop the war.
The criminal regime in the Kremlin announced on Tuesday that the war will continue until the objectives set by Vladimir Putin are achieved either through military action or negotiation.
