At least 57 universities and 13 secondary vocational education institutions in Russia have launched public recruitment campaigns for the war against Ukraine, according to the publication Eho.

The agitation is taking place in at least 23 regions of Russia, as well as in annexed Crimea.

Saint Petersburg and Moscow, at the top

The highest number of involved institutions is in Saint Petersburg — 19 educational units. Followed by Moscow — with 13. The top five also include Tatarstan (6), Novosibirsk region (5), and Krasnodar Territory (4).

“The main start in life”

Signing a contract with the Ministry of Defense is presented as “the main start in life”. This phrase is used, among others, by Russian University of Economics named after Plekhanov, which promises the possibility of serving “without interrupting studies” and transfer to budgeted places.

Saint Petersburg State University offers volunteers a one-time additional payment of 50,000 rubles (approximately 550 euros) and the possibility to continue their studies later.

Higher School of Economics guarantees academic leave during military service, and RTU MIREA promises to close the students’ arrears who go to the front.
