An international plan for civilian evacuation is being developed by Poland and Lithuania in case of a major crisis or military threat. A strip of territory connecting the two countries plays a particularly important role in this plan.

The plans are being carried out within the framework of Lithuania’s “Vyčio Skliautas 2026” exercises, which began on September 25 and end on October 3, reports Euronews. They are intended to test the national mobilization system and institutional cooperation in a crisis situation.

One of the practical components of the exercises involves testing the procedures for evacuating the population.

Approximately 3,000 officials, officers, and representatives of various institutions, local authorities, companies, and non-governmental organizations are participating in the exercises, along with about 1,000 volunteers.

A delegation of approximately 20 people from various Polish institutions has also arrived in Lithuania. The exercises test the population warning systems, the organization of gathering and registration points, and the transportation and movement of evacuated people through successive areas.

Poland is also involved in cross-border evacuation planning activities.

The Lithuanian authorities say that these exercises represent training activities and do not indicate that the authorities would anticipate an imminent threat.
