Customs employees in Saint Petersburg have announced the discovery of an alleged “extremist literature” in a batch of children’s books imported from the United Kingdom.

According to the images published by the authorities, these are products of the Usborne publishing house. Among the photos, there is, among others, a story about dinosaurs meeting Santa Claus, a book about the behavior of parent birds, collections of puzzles and crosswords, a toy book for small children, as well as educational materials about creative writing and anatomy.

The customs officers stated that within the entire batch — weighing 12.7 tons and valued at 140,000 pounds sterling — 28 books with “extremist content” were identified, in English and German. According to the institution, an “expertise” would have confirmed the existence of prohibited information, without specifying exactly what it is about.

The books were ordered by a Russian company specializing in pedagogical literature and the sale of books in foreign languages. A case was opened against the carrier for violating restrictions on the movement of goods across the border of the Eurasian Economic Union. The company risks a fine between 50,000 and 300,000 rubles (approximately 500–3,000 euros), as well as the confiscation of the goods.
