The killing in eastern Poland of an exiled Russian cartoonist, Robert Kuzovkov, known for his drawings mocking Russian President Vladimir Putin, has all the characteristics of a political assassination, said Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk on Wednesday, according to AFP.

“Everything indicates that this is a political assassination,” Tusk declared on Monday, regarding the assassination of the cartoonist Robert Kuzovkov, 44 years old, known by the artist name Semion Skrepeţki. “If it was ordered by Russia, then it is also a very serious matter, with an international dimension,” Tusk added.

According to Polish authorities, the Russian cartoonist was killed on the street Monday morning by an unidentified man who fired three shots with a handgun, reports AFP, quoted by News.ro.

After the artist fell, the attacker approached and shot him twice more at close range. In the past, the Polish authorities had offered the cartoonist protection, but he had declined it.

Two Belarusians were arrested in an alleged connection with the case, but were released, judicial authorities announced on Wednesday. An investigation is underway to find the attacker. The case could reignite historical tensions between Poland and its neighbor Russia.
