The decisions to denounce by the Republic of Moldova of the Agreement of establishment, the related protocol, and the status of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) were promulgated by Maia Sandu and published in the Official Monitor.

Tatiana Barac, the spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, clarified for realitatea.md that after the decisions are published in the Official Gazette, the CIS will be notified, and after a period of 12 months, the agreements will cease to be valid.

Officials from the Republic of Moldova assert that relations with the member states of the CIS will continue after denunciation on bilateral and multilateral platforms, reports IPN. According to them, the Republic of Moldova will remain a party to several treaties concluded within the CIS, especially in the commercial-economic and social fields.

On the other hand, the Kremlin previously conveyed that the authorities in Moldova cannot unilaterally decide which agreements to maintain, and the final decision will belong to the member states of the CIS, according to realitatea.md

The Parliament voted on April 2nd in the final reading to denounce the Agreement of Establishment and the Statute of the CIS. Chisinau started the withdrawal process from the Community after the invasion of Ukraine, one of the reasons being that Russia does not respect the provision according to which member states mutually respect their territorial integrity, independence, and sovereignty.
