The German government is considering a major change in defense policy: the compulsory mobilization of reservists for activities beyond the usual military exercises, even in times of peace.
The Ministry of Defense in Berlin is working on a bill in this regard, reports EFE agency, cited by Agerpres.
Natalie Jenning, the spokesperson for the ministry, stated that the authorities want the reservists “to fulfill their service regularly and seriously”.
According to this, the current system, based on “double volunteering” – the agreement of the reservist and the employer – no longer meets the security requirements.
However, the project stipulates that employers will be able to request the postponement of mobilization in situations where an employee is “completely indispensable”.
Correcting a legislative error
The German Ministry of Defense intends to remove a controversial clause from the new military service law, which came into effect this year, stipulating that men of military age must seek permission from the Ministry of Defense to leave Germany for more than three months.
Jenning acknowledged that the provision was a “mistake” and an “inaccuracy”, which was never applied.
