Berlin will double the forces of its anti-drone police unit, announced on Monday by the German Ministry of the Interior, following the discovery last week of an explosive drone at the Leipzig airport, a key military hub for Ukraine and NATO, reports AFP, quoted by Agerpres.

“The Minister (of Internal Affairs, Alexander Dobrindt) will order the federal police today to increase the number of special forces engaged in the anti-drone unit to 300,” said a ministry spokesperson, Sonja Kock, during a press conference in Berlin.

Until now, this unit counted approximately 130 people, according to the German government’s website.

The number of sites dedicated to drone defense will also increase from four to eight in order to “be present as much as possible throughout the entire German territory with the aim of intervening quickly and flexibly when necessary,” added Sonja Kock.

Among other things, on August 18, a new center for the study, development, and testing of drone security technology will be inaugurated,” she continued. This center – located in Hecklingen, about 200 km west of Berlin – is established in cooperation with the ministries of interior and research, as well as with the German Center for Aeronautics and Astronautics (DLR).
