Germany will provide 50 million euros for the repair of the sarcophagus of Reactor 4 at Chernobyl, announced the Ministry of Energy of Ukraine on Wednesday. The structure had previously been damaged by a Russian drone attack, writes Kyiv Independent.

The Minister of Energy, Denîs Șmîhal, thanked the German Minister of Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety, Carsten Schneider, for his recent visit to the power plant and for his commitment to “ensure the nuclear safety of Ukraine and the whole of Europe”.

The funds will be deposited in the International Cooperation Account for Chernobyl (ICCA), according to the Ministry of Energy.

The sarcophagus, a colossal structure that covers the remnants of the Chernobyl reactor, was damaged by Russian drones in February 2025. The incident was confirmed after the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) estimated the damages at 500 million euros.

The steel structure was designed to protect the reactor for 100 years, but it remained fully functional for only six years, as the inner waterproof membrane smoldered for three weeks after the impact, forcing firefighters to cut holes in the outer layer.
