German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has committed to providing Ukraine with long-range weapons, AFP reported.
During a joint press conference with Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson on Tuesday, Merz stated that Germany is “doing everything possible” to equip the Ukrainian army with long-range weapon systems.
“In recent months, we have been working intensively with the Ukrainian government on what we technically call ‘long-range fire’. The Ukrainian army will be equipped with such systems,” the German Chancellor announced.
“The quantity will increase in the coming weeks and months, if necessary, until such systems can also be produced in Ukraine,” he added.
However, when asked whether Germany will provide Ukraine with Taurus missiles, Merz did not give a clear answer, explaining that maintaining a degree of mystery about the extent of Western military aid is deliberate.
“We have agreed not to discuss the details publicly, because we believe that the Russian side should be kept in suspense about the extent of our military support,” he said.
The Taurus missiles, long desired by Kiev, are capable of hitting targets 500 kilometers away, which would exceed the range of all other weapons that Ukraine has received from allies.
