President Aleksandr Lukashenko expressed his disappointment with the market economy, arguing that economic tools can be used to achieve goals similar to a “classic war”.

“Economic tools achieve the goals of a classic war: to take your resources, provoke social protests, force you to live by other rules, not your own. I want you to open your eyes and understand how the world is evolving. God has spared us from this terrible and unclear market economy. We were always told: the market will regulate everything. We didn’t give up anything, we resisted and today we understood: no market regulates anything,” declared the leader from Minsk.

Lukashenko stated that for years, Belarus was pressured to give up sectors considered inefficient and to trust market mechanisms, but in his opinion, this did not work.

He also offered an interpretation of how the global economy works, referring to the policy of the US President, Donald Trump.

“You look to the north — Greenland is rich — let’s take it. Even Canada, one of the largest countries in the world, should become the 51st state. Venezuela: they caught the president. What cartel, what drugs? Oil!”, Lukashenko said.

He added that he is “grateful to the US President” for acting openly, stating that it became clear “where they were pushing us” by promoting liberal principles which, in his opinion, would have imposed external rules.
