Hackers who stole a record $6.3 billion from Binance used fake job interviews and a compromised internal artificial intelligence tool, the company has revealed, according to the BBC.
Initial findings released by the company, which operates the world’s largest cryptocurrency trading platform, indicate that hackers gained access to its systems through a “sophisticated, multi-stage campaign”.
The company said the attackers used a range of techniques, including downloading malicious software, to compromise Binance engineers’ computers and gain control of tools that enabled them to transfer billions of dollars’ worth of cryptocurrency from the company’s wallet.
Binance described the issue as a “serious and highly sophisticated security incident” and apologized, stating that “this should never have happened.”
In a post on X, Binance said that hackers had targeted its engineers using social engineering techniques.
Hackers use techniques such as phishing to trick people into revealing sensitive or personal information, which can then be used to try to gain access to their accounts.
