The German Chancellor Friedrich Merz stated on Wednesday that his relationship with the American President Donald Trump remains good, despite the disagreement between the two regarding the war in Iran. However, the head of the federal government in Berlin reiterated his concern about the economic impact of the conflict in the Middle East, reports Reuters.

This misunderstanding reflects the divergent views between the Trump administration and its European NATO allies regarding Iran and other issues, including the conflict in Ukraine.

“From my perspective, my personal relationship with the US president remains good. I simply had doubts from the beginning about what started with the war in Iran. That’s why I stated it clearly,” Merz declared in front of the reporters.

“In Germany and Europe, we suffer from the consequences (of the conflict in the East, ed.), such as the closure of the Strait of Hormuz. This has a direct impact on our energy supply and a huge impact on our economic performance,” Merz said, adding that Washington and Berlin are in dialogue.
