Patriarch Kirill is targeted in the 21st package of EU sanctions against Russia. The church leader is accused of justifying, supporting, and promoting the war.

Under his real name, Vladimir Gundyaev, Kirill claimed that the sins of Russians who died on the front will be forgiven, and he called Russia’s invasion of Ukraine a “holy war”.

The EU will also sanction the president of the International Chess Federation (FIDE), Arkady Dvorkovich. It is said about the latter that he publicly supported the war and is associated with the Russian Chess Federation, which legitimized the occupation of some regions in Ukraine by organizing tournaments there.

Previously, Viktor Orban had refused to support sanctions against them, according to tv8.md. With the change of power in Hungary, the measures were approved.

Additionally, several Russian sports officials could be targeted by sanctions. This includes Minister Mihail Degtyarev, the President of the Russian Wrestling Federation Mihail Mamiașvili, and Stanislav Pozdnyakov, the former head of the Russian Olympic Committee. All those mentioned are believed to support Russian aggression against Ukrainians.
