President Donald Trump stated that Vladimir Putin is “absolutely not” afraid of Europe, but rather, he fears the United States and its weapons. The White House leader emphasized that “we (the US) are NATO,” and that the Russian president fears the US.

“We are NATO. You can ask Putin. He is not afraid of Europe at all. He fears the United States of America and the military that I built in my first term,” said the American president, in a press conference where he called for the assistance of NATO countries in the Strait of Hormuz.

Donald Trump’s statement comes in a context where negotiations to end the war in Ukraine do not seem to be making progress. Since the beginning of this year, Ukraine, the US, and Russia have already conducted three rounds of peace negotiations in Ukraine. The fourth round was supposed to take place in early March, but was postponed due to the start of a joint US-Israel operation against Iran.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that teams from Ukraine and the US are actively consulting on sanction policy and security guarantees. However, he emphasized that resolving key issues requires a meeting between the two presidents.
