Latvia’s armed forces reported that an unidentified object entered the country’s airspace on Sunday near its borders with Belarus and Russia, according to Reuters.
During the alert, the military urged residents to stay indoors as a safety precaution.
“Please be advised that there is a threat in the airspace… If you spot a low-flying or suspicious object, do not approach it,” the military said in a post on X.
The alert ended after about 30 minutes, when the military announced that the unidentified object had left Latvian airspace.
Ukrainian military drones have accidentally entered the airspace of Finland, Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania on several occasions.
As Ukrainian forces strike Russian ports on the Baltic Sea used to ship oil, some of their drones have missed their targets, triggering security alerts in neighbouring countries. In Latvia, this led to the collapse of the government in the spring.
Moscow has accused Kyiv of using NATO airspace as cover for attacks. Kyiv, for its part, says some of its drones were knocked off course by Russian jamming.
