Iran will not accept a ceasefire and considers it “illogical” to initiate negotiations with the United States, reported the semi-official Iranian news agency Fars on Wednesday, citing a source familiar with diplomatic activity, according to CNN.
“A well-informed source, who spoke to Fars News, highlighted the failure of the opposing side to achieve its objectives, and stated: ‘Iran does not accept a ceasefire. Essentially, initiating such a process with those who have violated agreements is not logical,'” the Iranian state agency reported, writes News.
Fars News also quoted this source as saying that Iran intends to achieve its strategic objectives before ending the war.
The statements from Tehran come after the US President, Donald Trump, claimed on Monday that both the US and Iran want to “reach an agreement.” Trump said that his envoys, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, were involved in discussions, which, according to him, Iran had initiated. He did not reveal who the US is talking to in Iran, but specified that it is not the new Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, about whose fate little is known.
The US has conveyed to Iran, through Pakistan, a list of 15 points for discussion, two regional sources told CNN. They stated that the points included limiting Tehran’s defensive capabilities, ending support for affiliated groups, and recognizing Israel’s right to exist.
