Iran repeats the strategic mistakes of Saddam Hussein, attacking Gulf neighbors. Expert: “It was the worst decision”

Over the past 36 hours, Iran has launched a series of missile and drone attacks on several Gulf states – Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, and Oman – amid escalating conflict with the US and Israel, according to an analysis by expert Shanaka Anslem Perera.

Perera compares the current situation to the Gulf War in 1991, when Saddam Hussein launched 39 Scud missiles at Saudi Arabia and Israel, attempting to weaken the anti-Iraq coalition.

“Saddam’s logic was transparent: to draw the neighbors into the fire to break the coalition under the pressure of civilian casualties. It was the worst strategic decision of the Gulf War. The coalition did not fracture, but consolidated,” emphasizes the analyst.

Perera warns that Iran is now implementing the “same plan, but with superior weapons and inferior judgment”.

In the latest attacks, targets included international airports, luxury hotels, and commercial ports, and the victims were largely civilians – including a Pakistani worker at the Abu Dhabi airport. The attacks even targeted countries that have declared in writing their neutrality and that they will not allow their territory to be used against Iran.

Dr. Ebtesam Al-Ketbi, president of the Emirates Policy Center, explained to Reuters that “it’s not the US in the line of fire, but us, the Gulf states. Iran’s attacks have hit the neighbors under the pretext of targeting American bases”.
