Tehran warned Bulgaria on Tuesday not to allow the United States to use its territory for military operations against Iran, reports Reuters, as relayed by Agerpres.
According to local press, the spokesperson for the Iranian foreign ministry, Esmail Baghaei, stated that any activity facilitating American attacks against Iran is equivalent to complicity in “aggression and war crimes”. He urged Bulgaria not to become “accomplice to the aggressors and those who violate the law”.
The government in Sofia has announced that it will seek parliamentary approval for the stationing of a maximum of eight US tanker aircraft at the Bezmer air base, located approximately 260 km southeast of the Bulgarian capital. These aircraft are used for in-flight refueling of other aircraft.
The President of Bulgaria, Iliana Iotova, quoted by BTA, stated earlier that the presence of American KC-135 aircraft and a contingent of up to 250 US soldiers at Bezmer is not equivalent to her country’s involvement in war. She clarified that parliamentary approval is mandatory, and the Bulgarian government respects the law.
