Igor Dodon has been invited to the meeting of the Gagauz People’s Assembly. The authorities from Comrat called him to the meeting after the Constitutional Court (CC) was notified by the Minister of Justice Vladislav Cojuhari about the possible illegality of the provisions regulating the organization of elections in the region, reports realitatea.md.
Comrat is preparing a response to the action of the Ministry of Justice, the decision to be taken at a meeting of the People’s Assembly on March 17. Igor Dodon announced on social networks that he was specifically invited to this meeting.
The socialist leader accuses the central public authorities of exerting pressure on the officials from Comrat, in order to “control the electoral processes and limit the competences of autonomous institutions, which causes serious concern”.
“Recently, I received an invitation to participate in an extraordinary session of the Gagauz People’s Assembly, which will take place next week in Comrat. This will examine an issue of exceptional importance for regional stability: the appeal of the Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Moldova to the Constitutional Court to declare unconstitutional certain provisions of the Law “On the legal status of Gagauzia”. I believe it is crucial that both sides show responsibility and political wisdom in this situation. Today, we urgently need to seek compromise solutions, restore dialogue between the central authorities and the autonomous region, and maintain the balance achieved decades ago,” says Igor Dodon.
Previously, the CEC composition in Gagauzia was approved by the People’s Assembly, which also set the election date and the electoral provisions in the region. The Electoral Commission of the autonomy was disbanded in 2025 and several court cases followed, and as a result of the disputes, the elections that were to take place in November 2025 were cancelled, but political tensions continued.
One of the problems is the disagreement between the provisions of national legislation and the regulations in the autonomy. More precisely, the electoral body of Gagauzia is named in autonomy “Central Electoral Commission”, while in the national legislation the official name is “Central Electoral Council”.
