The United States and Iran have agreed to extend the memorandum of understanding, initially agreed upon in June, for another 60 days in order to end the war in the Middle East, reports Saudi television station Al Arabiya.

The information has not yet been officially confirmed by either Washington or Tehran. The only signal came from the American president, Donald Trump, who posted a message on social networks, without providing details about the new terms or the exact duration of the extension.

“The main objective is – and will always remain – that Iran should not be able to possess, in any way or form, a nuclear weapon,” states the message of the American leader.

The memorandum of understanding was signed on June 16, and the two parties agreed to hold peace talks for two months, to end the war and establish long-term peace in the region. Among the key topics were Tehran’s nuclear program and navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, closed by Iran to Western and Israeli ships and conditioned for others.

The strait is vital for global trade, as it transits approximately one fifth of the oil consumed globally, reports IPN. The restriction of traffic has led to increased volatility in the prices of oil barrels on international markets, where it has even been traded at values over 100 dollars.

On the other hand, the spokesperson for the Iranian Foreign Ministry, Esmaeil Baghaei, stated that negotiations on the nuclear agreement have never begun and mentioned that the 60-day term, agreed upon in June, would have lost its relevance.
