Nuclear energy could become a solution for Italy’s economy, heavily impacted by the surge in fuel prices due to the war in the Middle East. In this context, the government led by Georgia Meloni is considering how to revive nuclear technology, reports Bloomberg, according to Agerpres.

Almost 40 years after Italy shut down its last nuclear reactor, and 15 years after a failed attempt to reverse that decision, the Prime Minister’s team is consulting with experts and discussing how to restart atomic energy production, according to sources close to the discussions. The sources revealed that Italian officials have traveled to Canada to evaluate different technologies and have also spoken with French officials about their nuclear industry. In addition, the government in Rome has internally discussed South Korean and American options, the sources added.

For Meloni, the campaign to restart nuclear energy production is a crucial component of her promise to assist companies struggling with high energy prices, as Italy’s prices are among the highest in Europe. Meloni has argued that nuclear energy could be part of the long-term solution, tying her political future to the success of plans regarding atomic energy.
