A court in Kazakhstan has allowed the Ukrainian company “Naftogaz” to recover assets of the Russian giant “Gazprom” located in the country, in a case worth 1.4 billion dollars. The clause is related to the transit of natural gas through Ukraine.

The announcement was made by the chairman of the board of “Naftogaz”, Serghei Korețki, who stated that this is the first time a foreign court publicly authorizes the forced execution of an arbitration decision against the Russian company in another jurisdiction, reports bani.md.

The conflict between the two companies originated from the contract signed in 2019 regarding the transportation of Russian gas through Ukraine. After the outbreak of the war, in 2022, transit through the “Sohranovka” station in the Lugansk region was halted, however, deliveries continued through the “Sujha” point.

“Naftogaz” then accused “Gazprom” of not fully paying for the services stipulated in the contract and initiated, in September 2022, an arbitration in Switzerland.

In June 2025, the arbitration court ruled that “Gazprom” must pay 1.4 billion dollars to “Naftogaz”, including debts for gas transit and court costs.

The Russian company contested the decision, however, the Swiss Federal Court definitively upheld the ruling in March 2026.

The head of “Naftogaz” stated that the Ukrainian company will continue procedures to recover funds in other states where “Gazprom” holds assets.

According to Reuters, the total value of lawsuits filed against “Gazprom” by former European partners since the start of the war in Ukraine exceeds 19.5 billion euros. Among the companies that have initiated actions against the Russian conglomerate are OMV from Austria, Engie from France, Eni from Italy, and Gasum from Finland.
