Keir Starmer, the Prime Minister of the British government, says he wants the Kingdom to return to a “closer partnership” with the European Union, in the context of global volatility, and that this is in the national interest of his country, reports The Guardian.

We will continue to fight for the national interest of Great Britain and we will continue to do what is necessary to guide the country smoothly through this storm.

However, it is becoming increasingly clear that, as the world continues to go through this volatile period, our long-term national interest requires a closer partnership with our allies in Europe and with the European Union,” Starmer declared.

The British Liberal Democrats, the main pro-European party in London, welcomed the Prime Minister’s message and communicated to him that he should support their project for the United Kingdom to rejoin the EU Customs Union.

“This is a reassuring, even if belated, moment of sincerity on the part of the prime minister.”
