Russian Foreign Minister, Sergey Lavrov, has claimed that the European Union is preparing special observers who are supposed to “secretly monitor” the elections for the State Duma in Russia, and in this context, he mentioned the presidential elections in Romania in 2025.
Lavrov made the statements in an interview given to the online project “Sama Menshova”, quoted by the Russian news agency TASS. The Russian minister did not provide evidence for the claim regarding the alleged preparation of some “secret observers” by the European Union.
“At present, we are receiving information that the European Union is beginning to train certain special observers who will secretly monitor the way our elections are conducted”, Lavrov declared.
Subsequently, the head of Russian diplomacy referred to the presidential elections in Romania in 2025, arguing that the vote was initially an “absolutely fair” one, and a candidate who supported the national interests of Romania was later “removed from the race”.
“In the first stage, everything was absolutely clean, none of the observers noticed anything wrong, and the winner was a man who advocated not for the blind following of Brussels’ orders, but for the assertion of Romania’s national interests. Although there was nothing to latch onto, he was simply ‘taken out of the race’, and that was all,” Lavrov stated.
Lavrov’s statement refers to the presidential election of November 2024, the first round of which was annulled by the Constitutional Court in December 2024. The elections were resumed in 2025, and Nicușor Dan won the second round against George Simion.
