Russia urges the United States to abandon its ultimatum tone to allow the resumption of negotiations with Iran, as tensions rise following the statements of the American President Donald Trump about possible radical measures.

The Russian Foreign Minister, Sergei Lavrov, conveyed that Moscow wants the United States to “abandon the language of ultimatums“, believing that this could facilitate a “return to negotiations”. The statement comes after a telephone conversation on Sunday between Lavrov and his Iranian counterpart, Abbas Araghchi, according to News.ro.

In an official statement, the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs specified: “The Russian side expressed hope that the efforts made by a number of countries to defuse the situation around Iran will bear fruit, (…) something that would be facilitated by the United States renouncing the language of ultimatums and resumption of negotiations”.

Criticism of attacks on civilian infrastructure

During the discussion, the two officials also called for the cessation of “reckless attacks and illegal actions against civilian infrastructure facilities.” Among the targets mentioned is also the Bushehr nuclear power plant, where Russian employees are also working.

On the other hand, American President Donald Trump stated in a phone interview with Fox News that he is considering the “takeover” of Iranian oil if a deal is not quickly reached.

The leader from the White House reiterated the ultimatum launched on Saturday, demanding the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. “If I don’t reach an agreement and that as soon as possible, I’m thinking of blowing everything up and taking over the oil,” Trump stated.
