On Tuesday, the deputies of the State Duma of Russia adopted, in the first reading, a bill that provides the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation access to the state register of civil status acts (ZAGS), including for faster management of military records.

According to the document, the ministry will have the right to receive electronic information about military personnel, civilian employees of the army, former military personnel, as well as members of their families.

In the explanatory note, it is mentioned that the purpose of the project is to facilitate access to social support for military personnel and their relatives, but also to “optimize the military records of citizens”.

The initiative was registered in the State Duma on March 21 by a group of deputies led by Nina Ostanina, head of the Family Protection Committee, and Andrei Kartapolov, chairman of the Defense Committee. The authors estimate that the law could be implemented within six months after being enacted by Vladimir Putin.

Previously, the Speaker of the Duma, Vyacheslav Volodin, stated that the project will be examined as a priority, emphasizing that “soldiers, officers and their families should quickly benefit from all the support measures provided by law, without unnecessary bureaucracy.”
