Maia Sandu, along with representatives of the Parliament and the Central Electoral Commission, met today with members of the Gagauz People’s Assembly. The elected officials from the region were summoned to the Presidency to discuss the elections that need to be held in autonomy.
After the Constitutional Court established that the electoral system must be uniform across the entire territory of the country and approved by Parliament through organic law, considering that the Republic of Moldova is a unitary state, the previously agreed solution can no longer be applied.
Therefore, at the meeting, it was discussed that the elections in autonomy must be organized according to the proportional system applied to the parliamentary scrutiny and to the one for voting local and regional councils, the presidential administration reports. In this context, Chisinau assures Comrat that the guarantees of a free, fair, transparent and competitive electoral process will be respected.
A portion of the members of the People’s Assembly present at the discussions supported this proposal, the representatives of the Presidency report.
The Parliament is set to adjust the normative framework and amend the Electoral Code, so that the elections in Gagauzia can take place in the fall.
