A Russian court has sentenced a 34-year-old man to 13 years in prison for “high treason”, after he made several small donations to a Ukrainian organization. The judges did not even take into account that the defendant suffers from epilepsy.
According to information quoted by the EFE agency and published by the independent portal Mediazona, the convict made 11 money transfers, each worth about 100 Ukrainian hryvnias, equivalent to about 2.2 dollars. The total amount transferred amounts to approximately 24 dollars.
The man was arrested a year ago at the airport in Ekaterinburg, in the Ural region, while he was on his way to visit his mother, according to the same agency, quoted by Agerpres.
According to information published in the independent Russian press, he had lived in Ukraine for a prolonged period.
The preventive arrest, extended several times
In the period preceding the conviction, the authorities kept him in detention through successive extensions of preventive arrest.
Every time he was about to be released, the man was detained again. The situation reached a dramatic point for the family when his mother and sister came to meet him, but he was not set free anymore.
