American President Donald Trump announced on Thursday that the United States will contribute 10 billion dollars to the Council for Peace, during the inaugural meeting organized in Washington.
The initiative’s immediate objective is to support the reconstruction of the Gaza Strip, but the White House leader emphasized that the new body will have a broader mission, related to resolving armed conflicts worldwide.
Donald Trump also specified that several allies of the United States have committed to contribute over 7 billion dollars to reconstruction efforts. “I am pleased to announce that Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, the United Arab Emirates, Morocco, Bahrain, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Uzbekistan, and Kuwait have contributed over 7 billion dollars to the aid package“, declared the American president at the inaugural meeting.
A body with extended powers
The Council for Peace, which will be led by Donald Trump, was initially conceived to contribute to ending the conflict in the Gaza Strip. However, its Charter provides for a broader role, that of intervening in resolving military conflicts around the world.
According to the eight-page document sent to the states invited to participate, “The Council for Peace is an international organization aiming to promote stability, restore reliable and legitimate governance, and ensure lasting peace in regions affected or threatened by conflicts”. The text also emphasizes the “need for a more agile and effective international peace organization”.
