The Vice President of the Russian Security Council and former President Dmitri Medvedev stated this Sunday that the overnight attacks in Ukraine were carried out in retaliation for Kiev’s lethal attack on a student dormitory in Lugansk.

According to a post on Telegram by Medvedev, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and his team “have drawn a harsh response from Russia with their terrorist attacks against children.”

“Apparently, it was intentional. They needed massive air strikes against Kiev’s structures”, the Russian official stated, who argued that this way it is “easier for Ukraine to ask for money and weapons” from external partners, according to Agerpres.

Russia used the hypersonic missile Oreşnik in its bombing campaign against Kiev on the night from Saturday to Sunday, an attack that resulted in two deaths and 56 injuries just in the capital, according to Ukrainian authorities.

The spokesperson for the Ukrainian Air Forces, Iuri Ignat, confirmed that the missile was among the 690 attack systems, mostly drones, used by Russia in the bombing.

Moreover, Russian state agencies have reported that Russian forces have hit targets in Ukraine using four types of missiles – Oreshnik, Iskander, Kinzhal, and Zircon – in Sunday’s attacks, in retaliation for Kiev’s attacks on civilian targets in Russia, according to Reuters.
